Your Policy

Understanding the fine print, how we compare to other insurers, premiums, beneficiaries, waiting periods, claims, exclusions, rerating

Your Policy

Who can I add to my funeral policy?

You can cover up to 21 people on one policy. Family members must be related to you in the right way.

Your Policy

What are waiting periods?

Sanlam Indie will cover you from the moment your policy is active, but for some types of claims, we have to wait a while before we can pay out a claim.

Your Policy

How do I claim?

We're in the business of paying out valid claims. Our claims process goes like this...

Your Policy

I’m transgender, does that affect my premium?

To calculate your premiums, we have to ask whether you're male or female because we need this information to calculate risk.

Your Policy

Do I need to declare any personal changes after I’ve taken out a policy?

You should tell us if your personal information changes, or if you change jobs to one of our excluded occupations.

Your Policy

Will my cover and premiums change over time?

We will only guarantee your premium won't change for 12 months at a time.

Your Policy

If I change my job, will it affect my cover?

You only need to notify us if you switch to one of the excluded jobs.

Your Policy

Why is my cover so expensive?

Find out why a Sanlam Indie policy might cost more than that of other insurers.

Need to make some changes? You'll need to contact Sanlam Indie (not Sanlam).

Your Policy

Can I claim for something that happens outside South Africa?

Sanlam Indie lets you skip some premiums without cancelling your policy, which is awesome for when times are tough and it’s an instant-noodle kind of a month.

Your Policy

Will my monthly premium go up over time?

Your Policy

When will my cover start?

You are covered from the moment you accept your policy - even before your first payment.

Your Policy

What happens to my payout if I have debt?

A lot of people think that debt disappears when you die. It doesn’t. But we don’t necessarily pay the bank first.

Your Policy

What is a cooling-off period?

A cooling-off period is a set period of time in which you can cancel your policy and get a full refund of the premiums you've paid.

Your Policy

Can my beneficiary be a foreigner or live in a foreign country?

Your beneficiary doesn’t have to be a South African citizen.

Your Policy

Why can I only get accidental cover?

Your Sanlam Indie policy will either give you full cover (where you’re covered for any kind of claim) or accidental-only cover (where you can only claim for accidental events) per product.

Your Policy

What is rerating?

Rerating is when an insurer reassesses your premiums. Many insurers recalculate your premiums on the anniversary of your policy start date, but at Sanlam Indie, we recalculate policies automatically in January each year.

We're on a mission.

At Sanlam Indie, we're using cutting-edge technology to transform the industry and deliver financial services that actually work for you.

No jargon. No messy paperwork. Just world-class products that are simple to use, easy to understand, and incredibly rewarding - allowing more ways for you to create and protect wealth.
